Blood Bowl – Star Player: Varag Ghoul-Chewer

Blood Bowl – Star Player: Varag Ghoul-Chewer

True story. Well partially. Haha!

Way back when I was working on this guy, I was reading Wudu’s Convert or Die one day, and he was posting about Blood Bowl and maybe some other minis that GW releases. I think it was about the pics of the new minis that were starting to come out. At any rate, there was some mention of this ForgeWorld model and how crappy it was.

I remember thinking at the time “He isn’t THAT bad”, and I vowed to paint this guy up beautifully and make Wudu eat those words!

As I continued to paint him, and especially at the highlights stage, I realized that Wudu had nothing to worry about. This ForgeWorld mini really isn’t good. The pose is ‘ok’, but the the resin sculpt really was crappy. Parts of the model are really rough, and hard to paint.

I imagine there are (a lot of) painters way better than I, that could probably make him look beautiful. But I definitely don’t think I showed Wudu anything.

Matter of fact, I have no doubt that I called this sculpt ugly at some point myself.

To make matters worse, there is the “new” Varag Ghoul-Chewer model that came with the 2020 boxed set. Holy crap does it look loads better.

The NEW Varag Ghoul-Chewer model.

Again, had I known this guy was coming out… Well, I wouldn’t have bothered to paint up the crappy ForgeWorld one. I’ll probably keep him around for now, and figure out what to do if I ever get time to paint the new one.

Next up: Probably some rocks.

    1. Thanks mate! Yea, he turned out all right. I’m leery of buying anything off ForgeWorld these days. It’s too pricey especially with shipping overseas. I imagine someday I might cave again, but it’s going to have to be a really great model!

  1. Well, I think he came out good though my own experience with Forge World is that while their customer service is good when I asked them to replace a broken or missing part, the quality of their resin is kind of crappy. To be fair, I haven’t bought anything from Forge World in a long time.

    1. Thanks Ann! I’ve only bought some of their Blood Bowl stuff and it’s hit or miss. The minotaur I did, one of my favorite minis to date, was from FW, and just a dream. Varag and More ‘N’ Thorg, not so much. I have another mini from FW, that might be coming up, if it ends up being my second team for this year (still working on 1st for 2021).

  2. Mmmm… Tasty, tasty words… Noma-noma-noma! 😉 Ok, perhaps I won’t entirely eat my words, you’ve done a super job painting him but he’s still not my favourite piece of resin. Can’t fault your paint job though – he looks the business!

    1. Thanks Wudu! And that’s the last I’ll pick on you…for maybe the next 3 posts, haha!

Yea, that resin was awful and not easy to paint in parts. Like I said, I’m probably stuck with him until I finally decide to paint up the new Varag. I can live with it for now.

  3. Whether the model is good or bad, there is no debate on your painting of him, which turned out brilliantly. As for the new Varag, for me it falls foul of all the normal problems of 3D design, with areas looking very blocky and a lack of soul to the model, but that’s just my opinion

    1. Thanks Dave, appreciate the comment!

Hmm, the new Varag…so, I think he’s an improvement over the ForgeWorld one, if at o thing else at least materials-wise, +1. But you’re right, there are some flaws there as well. He seems to lean more towards the AoS Orcs, at least from what I know (which isn’t much!). They are quite blocky, so that might be where that is coming in. The pose has some action to it, but has been used over and over, -1. They added the skull on top his head, +1. But left the big blade off, -1. Also, just because his name is Ghoul-Chewer, doesn’t mean you have to literally put a ghoul on him, -1. So I guess I would give him a B grade overall. Had they been a bit more faithful to this look ( I’d probably give him a solid A!

      1. That’s a good rule to follow. I don’t care for non-throwers having the football. GW’s choice to give Morg the football was a poor one. I actually like the look of this model and I recently picked up a China-cast version of it since it’s now OOP.

  4. Gotta say it’s more the painter than the model that makes the final product work. I have had many old models from the 70s and early 80s that really are not very crisp sculpts, yet I think I’ve been able to pull off something with them. I think you have here too, No I get it you may have better alternatives. I’d be proud of this!

    1. Thanks Mark! I think I did okay, but I think for the money I paid, he should have been a lot better quality. The new one is probably 1/4 the price in comparison. And most would say he looks better. But we do what we can, and hopefully are mostly pleased with the results in the end. And likely more pleased as time passes and maybe don’t recall all the steps it took to get there! 😉

  5. For what it’s worth, I think you did a great job on him. This hobby can be an exercise in turd polishing from time to time, although he isn’t by far the worst model I’ve seen.
